Menopause myth busting quiz 💃

Menopause can feel confusing, with so much misinformation and not enough clear guidance, it’s hard to know what’s true. That’s why Dr. Amini has created this quick quiz below to help you sort fact from fiction.

How much do you really know about perimenopause and menopause?

Take this quick True or False quiz to test your knowledge:

1️⃣ Hormone blood tests are the most accurate and reliable way to determine if you are in perimenopause.

2️⃣ Average age of menopause is 51 for all women.

3️⃣ Resistance training and calcium supplementation are equally effective as hormone therapy for preventing bone loss in menopause.

4️⃣ Diet and lifestyle can have a positive impact on menopausal symptom management.

5️⃣ Vaginal estrogen therapy is a great option for supporting vaginal dryness without having a systemic effect on the rest of the body.

6️⃣ Naturopathic Doctors Licensed in Ontario can prescribe hormones for menopause hormone therapy.

7️⃣ If you are in your 40s, and experiencing sleep disturbances, hair thinning, low energy and weight gain, chances are you are in perimenopause.

Answer Key:

  1. ❌ This is false, perimenopause is a great time of hormonal fluctuation and as such blood work results would look different from month to month. The official and medical diagnosis of perimenopause is if your cycle fluctuates +/-7 days.

  2. ❌ This is tricky - the answer is technically false. While, it is widely believed that the average age of menopause is 51 for all women, this differs for different ethnicities. For example, the average age of menopause in south Asian women is around 47 years.

  3. ❌ False - While resistance training and calcium supplementation can play a positive and important role after menopause, they don't prevent bone loss. However, estrogen given as part of Menopause Hormone Therapy prevents bone loss.

  4. ✅ This is true! We know that women who eat a balanced mediterranean diet and exercise regularly suffer from less hot flashes.

  5. ✅ This is also true - vaginal estrogen therapy can be a great way to support vaginal dryness! This type of therapy does not have a systemic effect on the rest of the body.

  6. 🤔 This is again a tricky one - Naturopathic Doctors that have written and passed the rigorous prescribing examination can prescribe hormones for Menopause Hormone Therapy.

  7. ❌ False - this is an interesting time in a woman's life where she really needs her health practitioner to act as her health detective to figure out what the source of her issues are. Low ferritin levels or hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) could also result in similar symptoms. Therefore it is important to find a practitioner who can spend adequate time to screen you appropriately.
